Global Warming

Our precious OCEANS

Legendary  ocean researcher Sylvia Earle shares astonishing images of the ocean --  and shocking stats about its rapid decline -- as she makes her TED  Prize wish: that we will join her in protecting the vital blue heart of  the planet.  Sylvia Earle's TED Prize wish to protect our oceans -Recommended WATCH!!  LINK

Time and Water Running Out for America's Biggest Aquifer
The  Ogallala Aquifer is a massive underground lake that stretches from  southern South Dakota through northern Texas, covering about 174,000  square miles. It is being drained at alarming rates.

"The magnitude of this is incredible," he continued. "20 percent of the irrigated acreage of this nation is over the Ogallala."  For  an idea of what a severe drought could do to the communities of the  Great Plains, consider the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, when gigantic "black  blizzards" ravaged farms and forced thousands of families to give up  their land and try to make a living elsewhere.

The implications  of ceasing irrigation on the Great Plains go far beyond local  communities. The farming areas fed by the Ogallala supply such large  quantities of grain that any drastic changes to that economy would  ripple across the world -- as seen in 2007, when fuel costs drove up  corn prices and sparked a food crisis in other countries, most notably  Mexico.

Earth rotation speeds; Axis does shift.

The time length of a day is now a little shorter than it was before two recent earthquakes.  The  speed that the Earth rotates increased slightly in 2004 following the  earthquake that struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. That 9.1  earthquake shortened the length of an Earth day by 6.8 microseconds,  scientists say. It has happened again as a result of the Chile Quake.  Additionally, the axis of earth has shifted slightly.  The amounts are tiny, but the effects are real, measureable, and influences all Life on the planet.
David  Kerridge, the head of Earth hazards and systems at the British  Geological Survey in Edinburgh, likened the change in rotation speed to  what happens when a figure skater draws her arms in close to her body  while spinning. "As she pulls her arms in," Kerridge told Bloomberg,  "she gets faster and faster. It's the same idea with the Earth going  around: If you change the distribution of mass, the rotation rate  changes."
(B NOTE:  As earth sped up our sense of TIME has also sped up which contributes to our sense of acceleration).

UN: Ice Age Imminent

America is caught  in an icy grip that a top UN scientist says could mark the beginning of  a mini ice age, a decades-long deep freeze. Professor Mojib Latif, leading  climate modeler, says we're in for 30 years of cooler temperatures -- a  mini ice age, he calls it, basing his theory on an analysis of natural  cycles in water temperatures in the world's oceans

The  Gulf Stream, also known as the North Atlantic Conveyor is the warm  current flowing North from the tropics to the Arctic. This warm current  is responsible for the temperate climate enjoyed by Europe and the US.  England without the Gulf Stream would have the same temperatures as Hudson Bay. Latest  research shows the Gulf Stream has already reduced in size by 10%.  There is 50% chance of it completely switching off if worldwide CO2  emission rates continue to rise. This would result in a temperature drop  of at least 5°C. The North Atlantic Conveyor last slowed in 1300AD. It  changed the climate enough to create a "little ice age" which lasted for  550 years. Before that, it stopped 8200 years ago and Northern Europe  became buried under 0.5 miles of ice.

LIVE  SCIENCE Magazine:  Big Freeze - Earth Could Plunge into Sudden Ice  Age.    In the film, "The Day After Tomorrow," the world gets gripped in  ice within the span of just a few weeks. Now research now suggests an  eerily similar event might indeed have occurred in the past. Looking  ahead to the future, there is no reason why such a freeze shouldn't  happen again - and in ironic fashion it could be precipitated if ongoing  changes in climate force the Greenland ice sheet to suddenly melt,  scientists say.  BIG FREEZE LINK

Glacier Melting Time Lapse
GLACIER MELT TIME LAPSE - awesome must see - A very impressive  presentation from a 2009 TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design)  conference monitoring glacier changes in Alaska, Greenland, Alps,  Rockies, Andes. The film is 20 min long but you can fast forward to 7:10  and start with the amazing graph of carbon levels and temperature for  the past 400,000 yrs.

In summary, global CO2 levels have never  been above 280ppm. That is a natural limit of the planet which has  happened 4 times and produced massive sea level rise,  high global  temperatures, followed by an Ice Age.  TODAY we are over 380ppm. It has  never happened before.  Earth now has a fever. (contributed by Reny).

Respected  National Geographic lists the science of climate change. Most  scientists now fear that the massive amount of carbon dioxide will lead  to a catastrophic rise in Earth's temperatures, dramatically raising sea  levels as glaciers melt and leading to extreme weather worldwide.  Sea  levels were 20 feet higher 130,000 yrs ago.
